Who supplies EMRs in Ontario
Ontario gives a useful picture of the market. About 90% of Ontario's roughly 12,000 family physicians already use an EMR, and about 92% of that market sits with three commercial vendors.
| Product | Ontario share* | Licence | How you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS Suite (TELUS Health) | ~42% | Proprietary | Subscription per provider, by quote |
| Accuro (QHR Technologies) | ~26% | Proprietary | Per provider per month, by quote |
| OSCAR Pro (WELL Health) | ~24% | Commercial edition of OSCAR | Per provider per month plus setup, migration and training |
| OPHIS | New | Open source, GPL v2 | No licence fee |
What per-provider fees add up to
PS Suite, Accuro and OSCAR Pro do not publish prices, so your own quote is the number that counts. As a reference, this table applies one published rate, $410 per provider per month**, to clinics of different sizes.
| Clinic size | Licence fees per year at $410 | OPHIS licence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 doctor | $4,920 | $0 |
| 5 doctors | $24,600 | $0 |
| 10 doctors | $49,200 | $0 |
Add-ons cost extra
Licence fees are not always the whole bill. Commercial EMRs also charge for add-ons:
- Online booking and reminders, from $31 per provider per month
- Patient engagement, $82 to $199 per FTE per month
What you pay for with OPHIS
OPHIS is open source under GPL v2, so there is no licence fee per provider. That does not make running it free: you pay for the hosting and support you choose. The difference is that those are costs you can shop around for, and your data stays in a standard database your clinic controls.
Accounting, HR and payroll are on the same platform with no extra licences. See the full feature list or compare OPHIS with OSCAR and OpenEMR.
